Lesson 2: Logorama

Time: 60 minutes

 Goal: Students will watch a part of the short film Logorama and will understand the importance of logos as a major advertising technique.

 

Materials:

–          Video: Logorama

–          Large sheet

–          Magazines

–          Media Journals

–          Pen or Pencil

Part one: Watching Logorama/Discussing (10 minutes)

  • The teacher will show the students the first two minutes of Logorama
  • The students will discuss as a class what they think a logo is

 

Part 2: Brainstorming (15 minutes)

  • The teacher will put the students intro groups of 5 and allow them to brainstorm as many logos they could remember from the film and even ones the have seen on TV or magazines.
  • The students each receive a lose leaf in order to complete the activity.
  • Each group will then have the opportunity to share their ideas with the class

 

Part 3: Dissecting a Logo (30 minutes)

  • The teacher will then post up a large sheet on the blackboard which will be prepared the night before. The title will be dissecting a logo and the sheet will include 3 columns.
  1. What is the logo selling?
  2. Who do you think the logo is selling to?
  3. What characteristics does the logo have (bright colors, small, big, funny..etc)
  • Have the students, individually, flip through magazines that the teacher provides or they have brought in for homework (see the first lesson) in order to find different logos and their characteristics.
  • Students will then be able to come to the front of the classroom, show the logo they found, or maybe one they saw in “Logorama“ and fill out part of the giant sheet.

 

Part 4: Conclusion (5 minutes)

  • Based on their findings, the students will now, have a few minutes to think of a logo they could create.
  • They will have to answer, in their media journals, the same three questions they answered before: What is is the logo selling?. To whom? Characteristics…
